Description

Want to impact residents in Hidalgo and Starr Counties?

Help the United Way of South Texas through its VITA Program (Voluntary Income Tax Assistance Program) to assist low-to-moderate income ($54,000 or less) families in Hidalgo and Starr Counties prepare their tax returns. IRS trainings and certifications are provided, free of charge.

VITA Volunteers:

  1. "Greeters" meet the customers, make certain that customers have all required documents, assure that all requirements are posted, and manage the flow of customers, including assigning customers to Tax Preparers.
  2. "Tax Preparers" are volunteers that are trained and certified to become tax preparers.  There are 12 sites open in Hidalgo and Starr Counties.  We will place you at the most convenient location to you.
  3. "Quality Checkers" are volunteers that are trained and certified at the Advanced Level to oversee work done by the Tax Preparers.

The VITA Program provides meaningful volunteer opportunities in which volunteers have a "real" impact on the customers.  If you are helping your employer meet Community Reinvestment Act requirements, VITA and its Financial Literacy component are a good opportunity for you.
