Why Clinic Assistance Matters:
Through our partnership with UTRGV, students have the opportunity to gain meaningful, hands-on experience in a veterinary clinical setting at our PVAS Center. Volunteers support our veterinary medical team with a variety of day-to-day clinic activities while learning about the care, organization, and preparation that help keep a veterinary clinic running safely and efficiently.
Volunteer responsibilities will vary based on the clinic’s daily needs, patient care priorities, training, and demonstrated skills.
Here are the possible ways you can assist our Laurie P. Andrews Medical team! Each task will be dependent on high priority and day to day needs determined by our staff.
Clinic Volunteer Roles:
Cleaning & Clinic Organization
Maintaining a clean and organized clinic is an essential part of providing a safe environment for patients, staff, and volunteers.
Sanitize clinic items, supplies, and work areas
Complete laundry, including washing, drying, and folding
Sweep and scrub floors
Maintain an organized, restocked, and sanitary environment throughout the clinic
Animal Care & Patient Recovery Support
Volunteers may assist with basic patient-care tasks under staff direction, helping ensure animals remain comfortable, clean, and appropriately cared for.
Feed and clean surgery patients with staff authorization
Set up CCP cats as directed
Apply Frontline or Catego as directed by clinic staff
Clean and disinfect kennels as assigned
Replace dirty food, water bowls, and bedding
Help maintain and restock Recovery Room supplies
Instrument Preparation & Sterilization for Surgical Procedures
With appropriate training and staff direction, volunteers may assist with the preparation and sterilization of instruments used in veterinary procedures.
Help prepare materials and supplies needed for procedures, ex ET tubes, syringes, and kennel cards
Help maintain an organized sterilization area
Assist with surgery room setup and breakdown
Important: Surgical preparation, instrument handling, and sterilization activities must be performed according to PVAS clinic procedures and only after appropriate training and authorization from clinic staff. The specific tasks available to each volunteer will depend on clinic needs, training, and demonstrated competency.
