The Young Center for Immigrant Children's Rights is looking for volunteer Child Advocates. We are in need of bilingual, Spanish speaking, volunteers in the McAllen, Edinburg, Brownsville, Harlingen, and Corpus Christi, TX and surrounding areas.

Make a difference in the life of an unaccompanied immigrant child by volunteering to serve as a Child Advocate. A Child Advocate is an adult who volunteers to spend time with and advocate on behalf of an individual unaccompanied immigrant child while he or she is subject to deportation proceedings. We get to know prospective volunteers through an initial screening interview, an application and reference check, and at the required two-day training. Once assigned to an individual child, each Child Advocate receives continuing training, support, and supervision from the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights.



As a Child Advocate, you commit to:

Visit with the child once a week (1hr) during the duration of their shelter/facility stay. Help the child think through options and decisions. Maintain close communication with Young Center staff and the child’s Case Manager at the shelter to schedule visits. Build organic relationships with the child through child-led activities. Advocate for the best interest of the child.

 

Volunteer Requirements: 

- Must be 21 yrs +

- Be bilingual, preferably in Spanish

- Be able to commit to weekly visits, as needed for on average 3 months.

- Be able to submit & pass state and federal background checks

- Vaccinated against COVID-19 (for in-person visits)

 

We will be having a 2-day trainings volunteers can attend:

Saturday October 26th & Sunday October 27th from 9am-3:30pm

Volunteer: Home Fire Dispatcher: Coordinate the response teams (Remote Opportunity)

Every day, the Red Cross responds to an average of 7fires a day in the Texas Gulf Coast. These fires are responded to by teams of volunteers who go and meet the family, within 2 hours, any time night or day.

How do these amazing volunteers get called out? By YOU - our newest Disaster Action Team Duty Officer. 

Purpose: Ensures timely activation and monitoring of local and regional Disaster Action Team (DAT) responses. The Duty Officer supports the DAT program either at the chapter/territory or region level.

Key Responsibilities: 

Leadership - 

May determine if Red Cross action is required; may decide if Red Cross will respond via DAT. Uses event triggers such as size, scope, and type of the event to direct the DAT response. Works with on-scene DAT leadership to support the response and provide technical guidance. Support and trains new Duty Officers.

Functional - 

Dispatch DAT members and monitor the response to ensure appropriate resources are made available.  Activate Disaster Health Services, Disaster Mental Health, and Disaster Spiritual Care, Public Affairs when requested. Documents incoming disaster notification and creates & verifies events in RC View, when applicable. Where appropriate, maintains access to and ability to use the Client Assistance System (CAS) to enter case data and load Client Assistance Cards (CACs). May be required to monitor activity across multiple DAT responses. Notify Chapter and Regional staff of significant events, and contribute to an Initial Incident Report, when appropriate. Attends monthly DAT meetings.

Time Commitment: At least one 12 hour on-call shift per week. Coverage of the night shift (6p-6a) and weekend shifts are CRITICALLY needed. Initially several hours on online training will be required in order to understand the role and the services provided.

Training: Training will be a mix of online and on the job. Duty Officers will need to go on a handful fire calls on scene to understand that experience. Once training is complete, you will not need to go on scene - unless you want to.

Work closely with your state director to serve as an ambassador for the HSUS by communicating our mission, approach and policies in order to foster a stronger and more visible animal protection presence in your community. Participate in HSUS-facilitated webinars or meetings. If possible, participate in and assist with your state’s Humane Lobby Day and/or local grassroots events. Develop and implement a local animal protection project, preferably working with your city council or county board of supervisors to advance an HSUS priority ordinance or resolution in your community. Encourage your networks to take action on HSUS alerts and priority policies. Recruit HSUS allies to continue expanding the diversity of our audiences, volunteers and the organization, and make the animal protection movement more inclusive for all. Humane Policy Volunteer Leaders commit to taking actions as directed by HSUS program staff and their state director, averaging one to three hours per week for one year (weekly time may vary). Ongoing participation after the first year is preferred.
