Volunteer: 31st Annual Rio Reforestation Community Planting

Our community and wildlife urgently need your help. The Rio Grande Valley continues to lose critical native habitat, and tree planting is one of the most effective ways we can restore balance, protect wildlife, and create a healthier environment for future generations.

That’s why we are calling on community members to take action at Rio Reforestation 2025 — a large-scale habitat restoration event. This year’s planting will take place on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge’s Milagro Tract.

Location: 904 W Doffin Rd, Pharr, TX 78577
Once you arrive at this address, signs and volunteers will guide you to the planting site. Please note: access to the site will require driving beyond the border wall.

Start Time: 8:00 AM

By planting trees together, we will fight habitat loss, improve air and water quality, and provide shade and shelter for both people and wildlife. The need is real — and your hands-on support will make a lasting difference.

What you need to do before the event:

Rio Reforestation Sign-up Packet — please complete the packet and email it to Mylen Arias (marias@americanforests.org) with Thamara Flores (thamara_flores@fws.gov) CC’d, or print and bring the filled copy with you on the day of the event.

Volunteer Service Agreement:

Individuals: fill boxes 1-11, 13-25, 28-34

Leaders/teachers/guardians: fill boxes 1-11, 13-25, 35-37, and attach a list of students participating

Likeness Use Agreement & American Forest Photo Release: allows USFWS and American Forests to take event photos. (Leaders/teachers/guardians may attach lists of participants who do not consent.)

Contact for more info:

Volunteer: Cat Caregiver

Communal cat rooms allow you to enjoy the attention of multiple kitties. But cats also need care, like having clean litter boxes, fresh water and food. Members of the kitty committee commit to taking care of the cat room duties one day per week. That means cleaning litter, ensuring fresh water and kibble are available and dispensing canned food. It also helps to sweep the floor to provide a clean environment for the cats to play. Then is play time. You can use toys and laser pointers to encourage exercise and play, or you can enjoy the cuddle cats that like to be held and loved on. Most of the kitties really like positive attention and reward you with plenty of purrs!

Volunteer: Dog walker

Get your exercise while you exercise a dog! Lots of great dogs need to get out of their pens so they can enjoy getting to stretch their legs and smell nature. They need to spend time socializing with new people and learning how to walk politely on a leash in order to prepare them for adoption. Some of the dogs would enjoy jogging as well. Some days, if you don't want to do a lot of walking, you can take the dog(s) to the play-yards where you can throw a ball or let them run around and entertain themselves. A variety of dogs are ready to show you around the property and show you their terrific personalities.

Volunteer: Humane Policy Volunteer Leader

Do you want to help create a more humane society for all animals? Check out our Humane Policy Volunteer Leader opportunity!

Humane Policy Volunteer Leaders are at the forefront of our work to advance priority federal, state and local animal protection policies. These efforts serve to advance humane priorities across all 435 congressional districts and thousands of state legislative districts across the nation. Please join our team! To learn more, review our Humane Policy Volunteer Leader ad here: www.humanesociety.org/policyvolunteer

Humane Policy Volunteer Leader responsibilities:

Establish and maintain effective, professional relationships with government officials and encourage their support of the HSUS’s priority animal protection positions. Actively engage in federal, state and local policy advocacy, including submitting comments to federal and state agencies on proposed animal-related regulations, as well as letters to the editor in coordination with HSUS staff. Work closely with your state director to serve as an ambassador for the HSUS by communicating our mission, approach and policies in order to foster a stronger and more visible animal protection presence in your community. Participate in HSUS-facilitated webinars or meetings. If possible, participate in and assist with your state’s Humane Lobby Day and/or local grassroots events. Develop and implement a local animal protection project, preferably working with your city council or county board of supervisors to advance an HSUS priority ordinance or resolution in your community. Encourage your networks to take action on HSUS alerts and priority policies. Recruit HSUS allies to continue expanding the diversity of our audiences, volunteers and the organization, and make the animal protection movement more inclusive for all. Humane Policy Volunteer Leaders commit to taking actions as directed by HSUS program staff and their state director, averaging one to three hours per week for one year (weekly time may vary). Ongoing participation after the first year is preferred.

Benefits of becoming a Humane Policy Volunteer Leader

The Humane Policy Volunteer Leader program is the first, largest and most effective animal protection policy volunteer program of its kind in the nation. HSUS volunteers are essential partners in our lifesaving work for all animals and are an integral part of this community of compassionate individuals, all of whom are deeply committed to advancing humane public policies for all animals.

Humane Policy Volunteer Leaders will become highly skilled in the rapidly growing animal protection movement, receiving advanced training and ongoing support. You will receive an orientation on our policies and programs as well as access to support and resources not provided to the public, including:

Volunteer toolkit and other resources on effective policy advocacy. Regular virtual meetings conducted by your HSUS state director. Monthly webinars on timely animal protection issues.

As a Humane Policy Volunteer Leader, you will develop skills in public policy advocacy, networking, leadership and strategic thinking, and have the opportunity to share your expertise and experiences with community members. You will gain a deeper understanding of how to be an effective animal advocate, gain in-depth knowledge about the HSUS’s priority issues and deepen your understanding of the policy process and political landscape at the federal level, as well as in your specific state.
