The Challenge-RGV is more than a weight-loss competition; it's an opportunity for participants to start living a healthier & more active lifestyle! The Challenge-RGV partners with local gyms, fitness experts, nutritionists, and local organizations to help participants eat well, lose weight and make long-term healthy changes.
The Challenge event provides social support such as text messaging and phone calls with motivational interviewing, free resources such as exercise classes, and monetary incentives for participants to work towards their weight loss goals. It is also a key method of providing education to our participants and communities at large. The Challenge-RGV focuses on promoting physical activity and healthy eating to achieve a healthy Body Mass Index (BMI).
The event is open to people 18 years and older from anywhere in the Rio Grande Valley. Participants are also not required to be overweight. Individuals who participate in The Challenge have their baseline weight taken at the kickoff event in January, and then again at a midpoint weigh-in and at the finale in April.
We are providing a midpoint weigh-in opportunity on Saturday, March 11th at Resaca de la Palma State Park in Brownsville as part of their 100-years of Texas State Parks Celebration!
We are in need of assistance with blood pressure checks and BMI readings for The Challenge-RGV midpoint event on Saturday, March 11th. All volunteers are required to arrive at 9:00am to assist with set up and to be at their assigned station by the event starting time (10:00am).
Training Required
All volunteers are required to attend a training session. During this training we will cover the program protocols as well as the new protocols developed to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and how to properly use the personal protective equipment (PPE) that will be provided to all volunteers. Once we receive confirmation, volunteers will receive a calendar invite for the training from TSSC@uth.tmc.edu.
We really appreciate your help with this event! Do not hesitate to contact us at TSSC@uth.tmc.edu with any questions or concerns.
