Environmental Health, Safety & Risk Management (EHSRM) is hosting the 2025 UTRGV Household Hazardous Waste Annual Collection, and they’re asking for our support! This event helps the university community safely dispose of household waste free of charge.

Due to last-minute scheduling conflicts with local parades, they’re short on help and are hoping to have 4–5 volunteers to ensure full coverage.

Volunteer Duties:
Volunteers will be split into three groups and rotated as needed:
– Collection (receiving accepted waste items)
– Disposal (helping sort and move items)
– Traffic Control (directing vehicles safely)

Accepted Items:

Batteries / light bulbs

Oil, paint, aerosols

Antifreeze

Pool, household, and lawn/garden chemicals

Craft & hobby supplies

Not Accepted:

Electronics

Appliances

Radioactive material

Medical waste or prescription drugs

The Young Center for Immigrant Children's Rights is looking for volunteer Child Advocates. We are in need of bilingual, Spanish speaking, volunteers in the McAllen, Edinburg, Brownsville, Harlingen, and Corpus Christi, TX and surrounding areas.

Make a difference in the life of an unaccompanied immigrant child by volunteering to serve as a Child Advocate. A Child Advocate is an adult who volunteers to spend time with and advocate on behalf of an individual unaccompanied immigrant child while he or she is subject to deportation proceedings. We get to know prospective volunteers through an initial screening interview, an application and reference check, and at the required two-day training. Once assigned to an individual child, each Child Advocate receives continuing training, support, and supervision from the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights.

As a Child Advocate, you commit to:

- Must be 21 yrs +

- Be bilingual, preferably in Spanish

- Be able to commit to weekly visits, as needed for on average 3 months.

- Be able to submit & pass state and federal background checks

IMAS is looking for enthusiastic and outgoing volunteers to assist at the Mysterious Cosmos Family Fun Night event on December 18th, 2025 from 6 PM – 8:30 PM. This free admission event welcomes visitors to enjoy a variety of galaxy and star themed hands-on activities and presentations. Visitors are also welcome to view the night sky through telescopes, provided and supported by UTRGV Center of Excellence in STEM Education.

*Volunteers will be placed in activity areas based on priority needs and volunteer registration. *

Shifts: (2.5 hr. shifts)

- Galaxy Spin Topper Assistant:

Spin into the Art Studio with visitors. Volunteers will assist the IMAS Educator in the Galaxy Spin Topper activity. Visitors will learn more about the movements of galaxies and the different types as they paint and design their own spiral galaxy onto a wooden spin topper. Volunteers will assist by providing supplies to paint and help clean and keep a tidy area for incoming visitors.

- Multiwavelength Bingo Facilitator:

Facilitate NASA Multiwavelength Bingo in the Art Galleries. Volunteers will provide timed sessions for Multiwavelength Bingo by calling cards and sharing information about the different ways space observatories capture images of galaxies through different wavelengths. After winning cards are confirmed, volunteers will provide winners with a small prize.

- Paper Circuits:

Light Up Exploded Stars Assistant: Learn about circuits and star life cycles in this hands-on activity. Volunteers will assist visitors in this simple circuit activity by distributing materials and assisting with instructions. After visitors create their light up exploded star cards, they may need to adjust positive and negative endings.

- Galaxy Scratch Art Station Facilitator:

There are three main types of galaxies in the universe. In this activity volunteers will distribute scratch art sheets to visitors and encourage visitors to draw galaxies, planets and star inspired art.

Volunteers are needed to serve as Balloon Handlers and Banner Carriers along the 1.5-mile parade route for Texas’s largest Holiday and Helium Balloon Parade — the 2025 McAllen Holiday Parade presented by H-E-B. This is a high-energy, community-centered event that brings thousands of families together to celebrate the holiday season.

Support The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program by assisting at the Angel Tree table inside La Plaza Mall. Volunteers will help shoppers select Angel tags, answer basic questions, collect returned gifts, and represent The Salvation Army with kindness and professionalism.

A 5K is being held to benefit Cinderella Pet Rescue. So if you want to help set-up the tent, tables and crates, pass out information or show/walk dogs available for adoption, then your help would be appreciated. Or just come to the event and enjoy a morning run to benenfit the pets at Cinderella Pet Rescue.

Help us fight hunger by volunteering in our Senior Box Program station where we prepare boxes of nutritious food to improve the health of elderly people or in our Product Recovery station where we inspect, sort, and clean product received from local food drives and retail donations. While these two stations are where volunteers help most often, opportunities may change based on necessity in other departments.

Join the Environmental Awareness Club and The Lennox Foundation Southmost Preserve in supporting the restoration of the Tamaulipan thornscrub habitat! Volunteers will help create native plant bands by planting seeds and seedlings in soil trays. These efforts will contribute to growing native species used to restore and protect South Texas ecosystems.

This role involves organizing, stocking, and managing inventory of essential items for new moms and babies, and make recommendations to the executive director to replenish inventory. Operation Christmas RGV is looking for passionate and creative individuals to join our Press Office Team as volunteers! We're expanding our media presence and need your talent to help us share our mission of spreading hope and joy across the Rio Grande Valley.

The Treasurer Committee helps ensure that every dollar raised is used wisely and reported transparently. Their work directly supports our ability to serve hundreds of families each year through our programs, such as toy drives, community meals, and holiday assistance. The committee’s efforts strengthen the foundation that allows our outreach to grow. The Treasurer Committee within Operation Christmas RGV plays a vital role in supporting the financial integrity and transparency of our nonprofit. This committee works closely with our Treasurer to assist with budgeting, record-keeping, fundraising logistics, and financial reporting.

Requirements:

- Basic understanding of financial organization (no formal accounting required)

- Comfortable with spreadsheets and digital communication

- Strong attention to detail and confidentiality

- Willingness to learn and collaborate in a team environment

Duties:

- Assist with monthly financial reviews and documentation

- Help track income and expenses for events and programs

We are ideally seeking 3 to 5 dedicated volunteers to be part of a small, consistent team. Volunteers should be 18 years or older due to the nature of the responsibilities. The time commitment is approximately 4–6 hours per month.

Most of the work is flexible and remote, though occasional in-person meetings may be scheduled as needed.

Cinderella Pet Rescue currently only has one social media platform (Facebook) and a website. We need to get other platforms (es. TikTok, Instagram, etc.) established to promote the pets, the needs and the agency. The goal of more adoptions, more volunteers and more funds to support the animals should be easier with the addition of additional active social media platforms.

French, Spanish, and speakers of other languages needed for document translation to assist individual's work authorization applications. 

When individuals submit documents to the court and other adjudicators, all of the documents must be presented in English.  We launched Remote Translator Program in February 2021 as an effort to extend our ability to provide translation assistance to the individuals we serve. These documents may include things that will be presented before immigration court and/or other agencies, such as identity documents and declarations. 

Work may be done remotely.  Turnaround time for a document will vary.

Communal cat rooms allow you to enjoy the attention of multiple kitties. But cats also need care, like having clean litter boxes, fresh water and food. Members of the kitty committee commit to taking care of the cat room duties one day per week. That means cleaning litter, ensuring fresh water and kibble are available and dispensing canned food. It also helps to sweep the floor to provide a clean environment for the cats to play. Then is play time. You can use toys and laser pointers to encourage exercise and play, or you can enjoy the cuddle cats that like to be held and loved on. Most of the kitties really like positive attention and reward you with plenty of purrs!

BARCC volunteer duties include cleaning and feeding animals, grooming and exercising animals and attending outreach events. Volunteers working alongside our team are given thorough instructions on how to properly clean kennels, feed, and care for the animals.

Join us on Saturday mornings as we do land stewardship projects for Quinta Mazatlan. Volunteers will get to learn more about local ecology, sustainable landscaping practices, RGV biodiversity, and more, all while giving back to the ecosystems that support us.

Volunteers will respond to emergency/disaster related calls. They will provide emergency/disaster information and referrals to the general public by softphone (online telephone), and are responsible to document the referrals provided and client’s demographics. All equipment needed for calls will be provided. This will be in an office space setting. 

COVID-19 Protocols: To maintain a safe environment for all volunteers we require the use of a face mask for anyone in the office (face mask not provided). This position supports the Regional Disaster Cycle Services (DCS) department. The Sheltering (SH) Service Associate is a temporary position assigned to work in person in a Red Cross Shelter before, during and/or after a disaster event. Sheltering Service Associates complete task necessary for shelter operations and interacts with clients to ensure their needs are met. Sheltering Service associates supports the day-to-day activities within a shelter, which can include working in reception, registration, feeding, dormitory, information or other areas within a shelter.

Get your exercise while you exercise a dog! Lots of great dogs need to get out of their pens so they can enjoy getting to stretch their legs and smell nature. They need to spend time socializing with new people and learning how to walk politely on a leash in order to prepare them for adoption. Some of the dogs would enjoy jogging as well. Some days, if you don't want to do a lot of walking, you can take the dog(s) to the play-yards where you can throw a ball or let them run around and entertain themselves. A variety of dogs are ready to show you around the property and show you their terrific personalities.

The Young Center for Immigrant Children's Rights is looking for volunteer Child Advocates. We are in need of bilingual, Spanish speaking, volunteers in the McAllen, Edinburg, Brownsville, Harlingen, and Corpus Christi, TX and surrounding areas.

Make a difference in the life of an unaccompanied immigrant child by volunteering to serve as a Child Advocate. A Child Advocate is an adult who volunteers to spend time with and advocate on behalf of an individual unaccompanied immigrant child while he or she is subject to deportation proceedings. We get to know prospective volunteers through an initial screening interview, an application and reference check, and at the required two-day training. Once assigned to an individual child, each Child Advocate receives continuing training, support, and supervision from the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights.

As a Child Advocate, you commit to:

Disaster Health Services (DHS) Service Associate (SA) is a temporary position assigned to work in person before, during and/or after a disaster event this hurricane/wildfire season. Volunteers in this role provide assistance and healthcare to shelter residents as needed.

Red Cross volunteers who take on in-person volunteer activities must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19. Virtual opportunities available for those who are not vaccinated or who do not wish to complete the documentation process.

Every day, the Red Cross responds to an average of 7fires a day in the Texas Gulf Coast. These fires are responded to by teams of volunteers who go and meet the family, within 2 hours, any time night or day.

Training: Training will be a mix of online and on the job. Duty Officers will need to go on a handful fire calls on scene to understand that experience. Once training is complete, you will not need to go on scene - unless you want to.

Assist Red Cross in delivering mission by alleviating human suffering caused by disasters. Primary responses include single family and multi family fires.

The role of you - the Sheltering Volunteer - is to serve as a member of a temporary work unit on a disaster relief operation to successfully complete their assigned areas of responsibility on a disaster relief operation. They ensure safe sheltering at a single shelter throughout the cycle of the disaster.

Looking for volunteers in the Cameron County area who is willing to do home visits for our patients to provide caregiver relief. We train our volunteers all the necessary skills to become an excellent volunteer. 

Become a companion for a patient in end of life and truly make a difference in someone else's life. This volunteer opportunity is focused on patient based care. The duties of a volunteer will be to provide companionship, caregiver relief, emotional support and administration work.

Our patients and our families always appreciate the help that comes from the volunteers and would love to have people who are caring compassionate who care about making a difference in the lives of others.

We need volunteers to assist low-income families who are in quarantine to run personal errands such as helping them with groceries or medication deliveries. If anyone is interested in assisting with these errands, please contact Somer Perez at 956-329-0324. Your help is much appreciated.
