Who We Are

Affordable Homes of South Texas, Inc. is a community based non-profit organization enhancing the quality of life by providing affordable housing and related services to eligible families.

Affordable Homes of South Texas, Inc, was founded in 1976 in response to a City of McAllen Planning Department survey of the housing conditions in the city. The results brought to light the fact that many families were living in substandard conditions.

For the last 40 years, AHSTI has been dedicated to not only improving substandard housing conditions, but to also help prospective homebuyers achieve their dream of homeownership at a price they can afford.

What We Do

Home Purchasing Program 

AHSTI builds in 19 subdivisions in 8 different cities. There are some requirements to participate in the program. For more questions, call us. 
 
Requirements:
  • Applicants must be a United States Citizen or United States Resident
  • Provide proof of income for the last 3 months
  • Meet the income guidelines listed below.  
To begin the process, start your profile today. The profile helps us assess your situation and guide you to the next step to homeownership. If you don't have internet access, a computer, or scanner for documents, feel free to use our Resource Center located in our McAllen and Weslaco offices.

Financial Literacy

Being healthy should be a goal every person has for themselves. Many people forget that being financially fit also affects your health. To keep our community financially healthy, AHSTI offers FREE Financial Literacy Classes. 

This free class focuses on two main objectives: boosting savings and reducing debt. This class is also great for students on the verge of graduating from high school or college students looking to live on a budget.

Home Buyer Education

AHSTI is a HUD Approved Counseling Agency and offers a HUD approved 8-hour homebuyer education class. The class covers the entire home-buying process and what you should know before buying a home.

If you are seeking to become a homeowner through the AHSTI program, you will be required to take this course. For those buying their home outside of the AHSTI program, please ask your lender if you are required to take the 8-hour Homebuyer Education Course.  

The classes are separated into two sessions that are 4 hours each. Part A is given at the beginning of the month and Part B is given at the end of the month. All in-person classes have a $50.00 fee that is due at the time of the Part A class.

 

You can also take this class online though our partnership with eHome America. The fee for the online class is $99.00.

New Beginnings Program/ Home Rehabilitation

The New Beginnings Program provides grant funds for rehabilitation or replacement of homes for the elderly or families with special needs. Upon inspection of the home and a determination as to the estimated cost to bring the home up to standard, an evaluation will be done and if repairs exceed $20,000 or 50% of the total estimated improved value then a rehabilitation grant cannot be provided.

Should the repair exceed the limits establishment, a replacement of the home shall be considered. Demolition of the exisisting home shall be accomplished by the family and a frame home built on concrete blocks provided on the family lot. A replacement home shall be provided as a life estate for the qualified family. The family shall lease the home from AHSTI for $1.00 per year, plus payment of property taxes and hazard insurance on the home.
