The Salvation Army - Hidalgo County

Who We Are

The Salvation Army is committed to “Doing The Most Good” supported by donors and partners who share a desire to help our neighbors in need. When hard times hit, we’re here to help meet all of the basic needs—whether it’s a bag of groceries, a hot meal, or assistance paying rent. Providing care and aid for those living on the fringes of society is at the heart of The Salvation Army’s mission.

Captains Luis & Laura Melendez are responsible for the work of The Salvation Army of McAllen. In 2005 Captains Melendez, fluent in English and Spanish, became Salvation Army Officers (Pastors), and have lovingly served Hidalgo County since 2013.

Come worship with us! Join us for Sunday worship with Sunday School at 9:45 am and worship at 11 am.  Tuesdays for women’s ministries (Home League) at 9:30 am. Youth services on Wednesdays at 5 pm,  and Fridays at 9:30 am for Community Care Ministries.

What We Do

Our Mission

The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.

Our Services

Emergency Housing

The Salvation Army of McAllen works with men, women, children and families experiencing homelessness in Hidalgo County. It is the only Emergency Shelter program in Hidalgo County that is able to house a complete family. The objective is to move these individuals and families from crisis to stability with emergency shelter.

Emergency Assistance

Rent Assistance — The Salvation Army assists individuals and families who are struggling to pay their rent. We are often able to assist those facing eviction.

Soup Kitchen & Food Pantry — The Soup Kitchen serves two meals a day available to all Hidalgo County residents. Our Food Pantry provides a food box of groceries to families to help get through the week.

Clothing — New and gently used clothing and household items are available at our Salvation Army Family Stores. We can supply store vouchers for disaster survivors or those who are experiencing financial strain. Tim’s Coats (winter coats) are provided to those in need.
